- Tub-to-shower conversions are the most affordable option
- Plumbing relocation is the single biggest added cost
- Frameless glass doors cost significantly more than framed
What drives shower remodel cost?
- Shower type - Freestanding showers cost the most due to custom framing and larger tile area. Tub-to-shower conversions are most affordable since they reuse the existing footprint.
- Tile and finish - Labor for tile installation and waterproofing typically runs $2000-$5000 alone, with premium materials costing significantly more.
- Plumbing - Relocating drains or supply lines is one of the biggest cost drivers, often adding $800-$4000 depending on complexity.
- Door type - A frameless glass door typically costs 2-3x more than a framed door due to thicker glass and precision hardware.
- Hidden damage - Water damage behind an old shower, discovered during demolition, can add significant unplanned cost.
- State - Labor in California and the Northeast runs 25-30% higher than Midwest states.

Shower remodel cost estimate - what is included
- Demolition - Removal of existing shower, tub or fixtures
- Waterproofing - Membrane and proper drainage slope
- Shower base - Prefab base, tiled shower pan, or freestanding floor system
- Tile or surround - Wall and floor finish in your selected material
- Labor - All installation labor, typically 45-55% of total project cost
The estimate does not include major structural repairs, significant water damage remediation, or asbestos abatement in older homes. Plumbing relocation, premium fixtures, built-in seating, niches and heated floors are available as add-ons in our calculator above.
The waterproofing is the job. The tile is the finish.
Almost every shower quote is discussed in terms of tile, glass and fixtures — the parts you can see. The part that decides whether the shower is still sound in ten years is the part that gets buried on day two.
Membrane application, pan construction and a flood test commonly account for something in the region of $500 to $1,500 of a job. It is rarely the line anyone asks about, and it is the only line where cutting cost reliably produces a failure. A shower that leaks does not leak into the shower; it leaks into the joists, the ceiling below, and eventually into a much larger bill.
Two questions separate a good quote from a cheap one: which waterproofing system is being used, and is the pan flood-tested before tiling starts? A contractor who tests and shows you the result is telling you something about the rest of their work.
What a tub-to-shower conversion actually involves
Swapping a tub for a shower sounds like a like-for-like exchange. It is not, because the drain is in the wrong place.
A tub drains at one end; a shower drains at or near the center. That means opening the floor, moving the drain, and re-tying it into the existing waste — which is why plumbing on these jobs commonly runs into four figures once the valve and supply lines are included rather than being a simple fixture swap.
The cost spread reflects how far you go:
| Approach | What it is | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Prefabricated unit | One-piece or multi-piece acrylic or fiberglass enclosure | Cheapest and fastest. Fixed sizes, limited look |
| Tiled walls, prefab pan | Manufactured base, tiled surround | Middle ground — the pan is the part most likely to fail, and a factory one rarely does |
| Fully tiled, custom pan | Site-built pan, tiled floor and walls | Any size or shape. More waterproofing labor, more to get wrong |
Curbless costs more for a structural reason
A curbless or wet-room shower is not simply a curb left off. The floor inside has to fall to the drain, and with no curb to contain the water, that slope has to be built into the subfloor rather than sitting on top of it.
In practice that means either recessing the joists or building the rest of the bathroom floor up to meet the shower. Either way it is structural work, which is why curbless commonly adds a few thousand dollars over a standard curbed build and why it is dramatically cheaper to decide on it before the floor is opened rather than after.
Where it earns its money is accessibility. If the plan is to stay in the house long term, a curbless entry is the single most useful thing a bathroom can have.
Budget for what is behind the wall
Bathrooms hide their problems better than any other room, because everything that goes wrong happens slowly and out of sight. Experienced remodellers price a contingency into bathroom work as standard, and the reasons are consistent:
- Rotted subfloor. A slow leak at the old pan or around the toilet flange, usually only visible once the floor comes up.
- Mildewed or failed drywall behind a surround that was never properly sealed.
- Old or corroded supply lines that are not worth closing a wall back over.
- Venting that was never right — frequently discovered when the drain is moved.
Hold 10 to 20 percent back rather than spending the whole budget on the contract price. If any of it turns out to be water damage that has been running a while, our water damage restoration calculator scopes that separately, and mold remediation is a separate job again.
Frequently asked questions
How accurate is this shower remodel cost estimator?
There is no validated accuracy figure for this estimator, and we will not invent one. Its rates come from published 2026 cost data and are maintained by hand, but they have not been measured against a body of real quotes. Hidden water damage found during demolition is the most common cause of overruns. Treat the result as a planning figure and the range as the realistic spread, then get at least 3 formal quotes from licensed contractors before committing to a budget.
What is the cheapest type of shower remodel?
A tub-to-shower conversion is consistently the most affordable shower remodel option, typically costing $2100 to $5200. This approach reuses the existing tub footprint and plumbing location, eliminating the need for major plumbing relocation. It is a popular option for homeowners who want a more accessible shower without a full bathroom renovation.
How much does a frameless shower door cost?
A frameless or semi-frameless shower door typically costs $650 to $2600 fully installed, compared to $200 to $800 for a standard framed door. Frameless doors use thicker tempered glass and precision hardware, giving a more modern, open appearance but at a significantly higher price point.
Does moving the shower drain add a lot to the cost?
Yes. Relocating a shower drain or supply lines typically adds $800 to $4000 to a shower remodel depending on the distance moved and whether the work involves a slab foundation, which is more difficult to access than a crawl space. If your budget is tight, keeping the shower in its existing location is the single biggest way to control costs.
How long does a shower remodel take?
A standard shower remodel typically takes 3 to 7 days from demolition to completion. Projects involving plumbing relocation, custom tile patterns, or discovering water damage behind the existing shower can extend the timeline to 1-2 weeks. Tile work requires curing time before grout and sealing, which adds to the schedule.
