Most homeowners have no idea what a home improvement project should cost before talking to a contractor. That information gap costs American families billions of dollars every year — in overpriced quotes, unnecessary upsells, and projects that go over budget because there was no baseline to compare against.

HomeEstimatorHub exists to fix that. Every tool we build gives you a realistic, data-backed cost estimate before you make a single phone call. Whether you're planning a pole barn, replacing an HVAC system, finishing a basement or building a new home — you deserve to know what it should cost in your state, with your materials, at today's rates.

We are not a contractor referral service. We don't sell your information. We don't have premium tiers or paywalls. Every estimator on this site is completely free, runs entirely in your browser, and stores nothing.

And to be clear about what I am not: I am not a licensed contractor, engineer, home inspector or financial adviser. These tools are a budgeting starting point built from published pricing and trade data. For anything structural, electrical, or involving asbestos, radon or mold, the decision belongs to the relevant licensed professional — not to a calculator.

How our estimates work

Every tool here applies the same model: a base rate for the work, scaled by the things that actually drive cost, then adjusted for your state and area type. The full methodology — including the 50-state multiplier table and a worked example — is published in detail.

The rate tables behind it are built on three inputs:

• US contractor rate data — We research average material and labor costs across all 50 states, updated regularly to reflect current market conditions.
• Regional labor multipliers — Labor costs in California or New York run 25–30% higher than Midwest states. Our tools account for this with state-specific pricing multipliers.
• Real project breakdowns — We study how costs are actually distributed across a project — framing, materials, labor, add-ons — so our breakdowns reflect what contractors actually charge.

Estimates here are built for initial budgeting and planning — not as a substitute for a formal contractor quote. Always get at least three quotes from licensed contractors in your area before committing to a project.

There is no validated accuracy figure for these tools. An earlier version of this page said estimates were “typically within 15–25% of actual contractor quotes”. That was never measured against collected quotes, so it has been withdrawn rather than restated. The methodology page sets out exactly how each estimate is produced, what the range around it means, and what it would take to publish a real accuracy figure.
