  • Most 800 sqft driveways cost $3,050–$4,650 for a new 3 inch install
  • Resurfacing is typically 30-40 percent cheaper than full replacement
  • Poor draining clay soil requires a deeper gravel base, adding cost
  • Curved driveways require hand finishing and cost more than rectangular ones

What affects asphalt driveway cost?

  • Thickness - A 4 inch layer costs more upfront but holds up better under heavy vehicles than a 2 inch layer.
  • Project type - Resurfacing over an intact base costs significantly less than full replacement with excavation.
  • Soil type - Clay soil requires a deeper gravel base to prevent frost heave and cracking, adding to cost.
  • Shape - Curved or circular driveways require hand-raking and precision rolling that rectangular driveways do not need.
  • Climate timing - Asphalt must be laid when ground temperature is 50 degrees and rising, limiting installation to warmer months in most regions.
  • State - Labor costs in California and the Northeast run 25-30% higher than Midwest and Southern states.

Cost of asphalt driveway calculator - by thickness

Asphalt thickness directly affects both material cost and driveway durability. The recommended thickness depends on expected vehicle weight: 2 inches is the minimum for light residential use with passenger cars only. 3 inches is the standard recommended thickness for most residential driveways. 4 inches is recommended for driveways that will support RVs, trailers or heavier vehicles.

Asphalt vs concrete driveway cost calculator

Asphalt and concrete are the two most common driveway materials in the US, and the cost difference is significant. Asphalt driveways cost $3 to $7 per square foot installed, while concrete driveways cost $8 to $18 per square foot installed nationally. At those rates an 800 sq ft driveway costs $2,400 to $5,600 in asphalt versus $6,400 to $14,400 in concrete.

FactorAsphaltConcrete
Cost per sq ft$3-$7$8-$18
Installation time1-2 days3-7 days (curing time)
Lifespan15-20 years25-30 years
MaintenanceSealcoat every 2-3 yearsMinimal, occasional sealing
Cold climate performanceFlexes well, resists crackingCan crack from freeze-thaw cycles
Repair costLower, easy to patchHigher, harder to seamlessly repair

Asphalt is generally the more budget-friendly choice with lower upfront cost and easier repairs, while concrete offers a longer lifespan and more design flexibility for stamped or colored finishes. In colder climates, asphalt's flexibility often makes it more resistant to freeze-thaw cracking than concrete.

Asphalt driveway resurfacing cost calculator

Resurfacing - also called overlay - involves applying a new 1 to 2 inch layer of hot mix asphalt over an existing driveway that has a structurally sound base. This is typically 30-40% cheaper than full replacement because the gravel base and excavation work are already in place. Resurfacing costs $2.40 to $3.60 per square foot in 2026, compared to $4.50 to $7.00 per square foot for full replacement. Resurfacing is only appropriate when the existing base is in good condition - driveways with deep cracks, potholes or foundation issues require full replacement instead.

Driveways fail from the bottom up

Asphalt is a flexible surface. It does not span weakness the way a reinforced concrete slab does — it follows whatever is underneath it. So when a driveway develops ruts, alligator cracking or a dip that holds water, the asphalt is rarely the thing that failed. The base did.

Standard residential construction is roughly 2.5 to 3 inches of asphalt over a 6 to 8 inch compacted gravel base. If trucks, trailers or an RV will park on it, 3 to 4 inches of asphalt is the sensible specification, with each additional inch adding somewhere around $0.50 to $1.00 per square foot.

Grading and base preparation typically adds $1 to $3 per square foot within an installed price of about $3 to $7. It is also the line a cut-price bid quietly reduces, because nobody can see it afterward. Two questions separate the bids: how deep is the base, and is the subgrade compacted in layers rather than dumped and rolled once?

Edges, drainage and the first summer

  • Unsupported edges crumble. Asphalt has no strength at a free edge. Where a driveway meets lawn, the shoulder should be backfilled and compacted flush so the edge is held. Driving over an unsupported edge is the most common cause of the ragged crumbling you see on older driveways.
  • Water must leave the surface. A driveway needs a crown or a consistent cross-fall. Standing water works into the surface, and in freezing climates it expands in every crack it finds.
  • New asphalt needs a curing period. It is driveable quickly but stays soft for a while as it cures. During that window, avoid parking in one spot for long periods, turning the steering wheel while stationary, and putting jack stands or trailer tongues directly on the surface. Your installer will give a specific timeframe — follow theirs.

The maintenance math is unusually favorable

Few home maintenance tasks have a return this clear. A well-maintained asphalt driveway lasts roughly 20 to 25 years. Neglected, that drops to something like 8 to 12.

TaskFrequencyTypical cost
SealcoatingEvery 2–3 yearsAbout $0.15–$0.25 per sq ft, or roughly $200–$400 per application
Crack fillingAs cracks appearMinor, and far cheaper than what happens if water gets in
Full replacementEnd of life$2,700–$4,200 for a typical 600 sq ft driveway

Over a 20-year life you would expect to sealcoat four or five times, totaling something like $800 to $2,000 — against a replacement cost several times that, and a lifespan potentially doubled. Our driveway sealcoating cost calculator prices that cycle in detail.

One timing caveat: a brand-new driveway should not be sealed immediately. Fresh asphalt needs to cure before it takes a sealer, and sealing too early traps the oils that are still working their way out. Wait the period your installer specifies, then start the cycle.

If the base has already failed rather than the surface, resurfacing over it will reproduce the same faults within a year or two. That is the point at which full reconstruction is the honest answer, and where comparing against a concrete pour — priced in our concrete slab cost calculator — makes sense.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is this asphalt driveway cost estimator?

There is no validated accuracy figure for this estimator, and we will not invent one. Its rates come from published 2026 cost data and are maintained by hand, but they have not been measured against a body of real quotes. Soil conditions and access can change the final price significantly. Treat the result as a planning figure and the range as the realistic spread, then get at least 3 quotes from licensed paving contractors in your area.

How do I estimate asphalt driveway cost?

To estimate asphalt driveway cost, measure your total square footage, decide on project type (new, resurface or replace), select thickness based on expected vehicle weight, and factor in soil conditions. Our calculator does this automatically based on your selections. As a rule of thumb, budget $3 to $7 per square foot for a standard asphalt driveway installation.

How long does an asphalt driveway last?

A properly installed and maintained asphalt driveway typically lasts 15 to 20 years, with some lasting up to 25-30 years with regular care. Longevity depends on proper base preparation, climate, traffic volume, and regular maintenance including sealcoating every 2-3 years and prompt crack repair.

When should I sealcoat a new asphalt driveway?

You should wait at least 6 to 12 months after a new asphalt installation before sealcoating. This allows the oils in the new asphalt to cure properly. After the initial waiting period, sealcoating every 2 to 3 years helps protect the surface from UV damage, water penetration and oil stains, significantly extending the driveway's lifespan.

Do I need a permit for a new asphalt driveway?

In many US jurisdictions, yes - particularly for new driveways or significant expansions that affect drainage or connect to a public road. Permit costs typically range from $50 to $500 depending on your municipality. Always check with your local building department before beginning any new driveway installation.
