What affects carpet installation cost?
- Carpet quality - The biggest factor. Premium and luxury carpet can cost 3-4x more than budget grade.
- Padding - Higher density padding costs more upfront but extends carpet life and improves comfort.
- Old carpet removal - Removing and disposing of existing flooring adds labor and disposal fees.
- Room shape - Rooms with many corners, closets or odd angles require more cutting and seaming, increasing waste.
- Stairs - Carpeting stairs is more labor intensive per square foot than open floor areas.
- State - Labor costs in California and New York run 25-30% higher than Midwest states.
How much does carpet installation cost in 2026?
The average carpet installation cost in 2026 ranges from $3.50 to $15.50 per square foot, including carpet, padding and labor. A standard 500 sq ft room costs about $3,100 to $4,500 for mid-grade carpet with standard padding, or roughly $3,500 to $4,900 with old-carpet removal added at about $0.85 per square foot. Carpet installation cost calculator - by quality
Our carpet installation cost calculator updates your estimate in real time as you select carpet quality, padding, removal needs and stairs. The calculator applies state-specific labor multipliers and includes a 12% buffer for waste and seams, which professional installers always factor into material orders.

Cost to install carpet calculator - what is included
- Carpet material - Your selected quality, including 12% waste and seam buffer
- Padding - Standard or premium density foam or fiber padding
- Installation labor - Stretching, seaming and tacking the carpet into place
- Tack strips - Perimeter strips that secure the carpet edges

The estimate does not include major subfloor repair, asbestos abatement in older homes, or significant structural changes. Furniture moving, subfloor repair, transition strips and disposal fees are available as add-ons in our calculator above.
Carpet tile installation cost calculator
Carpet tile (carpet squares) costs $2 to $8 per square foot for material, comparable to broadloom carpet in the standard to premium range. Carpet tile is popular for basements, home offices and commercial spaces because individual tiles can be replaced if damaged without recarpeting the entire room. Installation labor for carpet tile is often slightly lower than broadloom carpet since it typically does not require padding or stretching, though adhesive application adds its own labor cost. Use our calculator above and select your room size to estimate carpet tile installation in the same way as standard carpet.
Estimate carpet cost and installation by room
| Room type | Average size | Standard quality cost |
|---|---|---|
| Bedroom | 150-200 sq ft | $950-$1800 |
| Living room | 250-350 sq ft | $1600-$3150 |
| Basement (full) | 800-1200 sq ft | $5000-$10800 |
| Stairs (12-15 steps) | n/a | $260-$330 |
| Whole house (1500 sq ft) | 1500 sq ft | $9500-$16500 |

The pad decides how long the carpet lasts
Carpet wears out from underneath. The pad absorbs the impact of every footstep, and when it bottoms out, the carpet backing takes that load directly and the fibers crush flat. A mid-range carpet on a good pad routinely outlasts an expensive carpet on a cheap one.
Pad is priced separately and the spread is meaningful: a standard pad runs roughly $0.25 to $1.00 per square foot, while a high-performance pad runs $0.75 to $1.75. On a 1,000 square foot job that difference is a few hundred dollars — small against the carpet itself, and the cheapest place on the whole quote to buy durability.
Two specifications matter, and both should appear on a written quote:
- Density, given in pounds per cubic foot. This is the one that governs how well the pad resists being crushed permanently. Higher density is firmer and lasts longer.
- Thickness. Thicker is not automatically better. An over-thick, under-dense pad flexes too much underfoot, which stresses the carpet seams and can void some manufacturer warranties.
Check the carpet manufacturer's warranty before choosing. Many specify a maximum pad thickness and a minimum density, and installing outside that window can invalidate the coverage you are paying for.
Where the labor number actually changes
Installation labor sits around $0.50 to $1.50 per square foot for a straightforward job, and stretches to roughly $2.00 once the work stops being straightforward. Three things move it:
| Condition | Why it costs more |
|---|---|
| Stairs | Each tread and riser is cut, wrapped and fastened individually. Stairs are commonly quoted per step rather than by area. |
| Complex room shapes | Bays, closets, angled walls and open-plan runs all create seams, and every seam is hand-work. |
| Subfloor repair | Squeaks, loose boards and damaged sheeting have to be fixed before carpet goes down, because none of it is reachable afterwards. |
Removing and disposing of the old carpet is its own line, typically adding $0.25 to $1.00 per square foot along with prep. Tack strips, transition thresholds at doorways and any glue-down work are also priced separately rather than folded into the headline rate.
Reading a carpet quote without getting caught out
All-in installed pricing on the figures above lands between $3.50 and $15.50 per square foot, with material accounting for something like 50% to 70% of the total. Two habits of the trade cause most of the confusion when comparing bids:
- Square feet versus square yards. Carpet is still often sold by the square yard, and one square yard is nine square feet. A price that looks triple a competitor's may simply be quoted in different units.
- Waste factor. Carpet comes off a roll in a fixed width, so the material ordered always exceeds the floor area. Room shape, roll width and pattern repeat all decide by how much, and a patterned carpet needs more than a plain one because the pattern has to line up across seams.
Ask each bidder to itemise carpet, pad, labor, removal and prep separately. Two quotes with the same bottom line frequently contain very different pad, and that is the component you will notice in five years. If the room is being redecorated at the same time, paint before the carpet goes down — our interior painting cost estimator covers that side, and for a basement job the basement finishing cost estimator puts flooring in the context of the whole build-out.
Frequently asked questions
How accurate is this carpet installation cost estimator?
There is no validated accuracy figure for this estimator, and we will not invent one. Its rates come from published 2026 cost data and are maintained by hand, but they have not been measured against a body of real quotes. Treat the result as a planning figure and the range as the realistic spread, then get at least 3 quotes from carpet installers in your area, and have the space professionally measured.
How do I estimate carpet cost and installation?
To estimate carpet cost and installation, measure your total square footage, select your carpet quality and padding, then factor in removal of old flooring if needed. Our calculator does this automatically and adds a 12% buffer for waste and seams, which is standard industry practice. As a rule of thumb, budget $5 to $8 per square foot for mid-grade carpet fully installed.
What is the cost to install carpet calculator estimate per square foot?
Carpet installation costs $3.50 to $15.50 per square foot in 2026 depending on quality, including material, padding and labor. Budget builder-grade carpet is the most affordable option. Premium and luxury carpets including wool cost significantly more but offer better durability and feel.
Does carpet installation include padding?
Most professional carpet installation quotes include padding as a separate line item since padding is sold and priced independently from carpet. Our calculator includes padding cost in the total estimate. Padding ranges from about $0.25 to $1.75 per square foot, from a standard pad to a high-performance one.
How much extra carpet do I need for waste?
Professional installers typically order 10-15% more carpet than the exact room square footage to account for pattern matching, seams and room shape irregularities. Our calculator automatically applies a 12% buffer to give you a realistic material estimate that matches what contractors actually order.
